Digital Accessibility
PALNI Open Press is committed to digital equity and to making our publications accessible to all readers, including those who use assistive technologies.
Our standard
We work toward WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance across all Open Press publications. This is an ongoing effort and a responsibility shared with contributing scholars. While PALNI manages platforms and provides support to ensure a barrier-free foundation, we expect contributors to submit content that adheres to accessibility standards from the outset, including alt text, hierarchical headings, and multimedia captions. Through this collaborative effort, we aim to provide an accessible experience for all readers.
Accessibility roadmap
As of April 2026, all new titles added to the PALNI Open Press catalog are required to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards prior to publication. Accessibility review is now a standard part of our publication process.
We are actively conducting an accessibility review of our existing community catalog using the Siteimprove Accessibility Checker and the WebAIM Web Accessibility Evaluation (WAVE) tools. Publications are being reviewed and remediated on an ongoing basis. Titles that have completed a full accessibility review and remediation process will include an Accessibility Status Statement within the publication itself.
Limitations
User-contributed content
Some titles in the Community Catalog include content contributed by third parties, and it may not always be possible to ensure full accessibility of these materials. Where resources allow, content is reviewed and remediated by PALNI staff or contractors. We will flag uncaptioned media identified during review and work with authors to resolve it where possible.
Known platform limitations
Our titles are published using open-source platforms. Some accessibility issues stem from limitations of the platform itself. We are documenting those limitations and will pass them on to the appropriate platform contacts.
Request support
If you encounter a barrier accessing any PALNI Open Press title or need a resource in an alternative format, please contact the PALNI Open Press. We will respond within three business days and work with you to find a solution.
